Hire the partner leader after the motion, not before.

Why first partner hires so often fail inside a year, and how to set the permanent leader up to succeed.

The first partner leader is one of the hardest hires a growth company makes. Hired before there is a defined motion or an agreed way to count partner revenue, the role often fails inside a year, and the company concludes that partnerships do not work.

That conclusion is usually wrong. The hire was asked to do three jobs at once: choose the motion, build the measurement, and produce the revenue, all while learning the company. Any one of those is a full quarter of work.

A better sequence

  • Prove one motion first. Pick one platform and one motion, run it inside the sales cadence, and get the first platform-influenced deals into commit.
  • Write the rules down. Agree attribution with the CFO and set the scorecard the permanent leader will be measured on.
  • Then hire. Write the role specification from what the motion actually needs, and recruit against it.

Hired this way, the permanent leader walks into a role with a clear mandate, a working motion, and a number the company already believes. The first year goes to scaling something real rather than proving that partnerships can work at all.

That is why every Henry Advisory Group engagement ends the same way. Every engagement includes the role specification for the permanent partner leader and hands-on help hiring that person.

Next step

Start with a working session.

Bring your partner pipeline as it stands. The session covers where partner revenue is real today and where it stalls.
